Preferring cool soils and exposure in full sun, high varieties reach stature heights up to 60 centimetres (24 in). The species is cultivated once a year, having numerous varieties whose crowns may be dark blue, purple, pink and white. Today, it is widely used as an ornamental plant for summer borders and balcony boxes, high varieties also as cut flowers.
Their habitat is pastures, moist forest clearings and bushes up to altitudes of 1,000 metres (3,300 ft). It was also naturalized in large parts of the tropics and in the southern United States.
The plant is native to Central America in Guatemala and Belize, and adjacent parts of Mexico, but has become an invasive weed in other areas. Sowing description: Sow seeds directly after receiving in sowing mix. The plant also does not respond well to direct sunlight, so a more shaded place is better. Make sure to provide well draining soil with sand and only water the plant when the soil has fully dried up. The plant is easy to keep as a houseplant that can best be kept in a cool place during winter. After flowering orange-red fruits appear. These grow out above the plant and have striking orange pollen at the tips of the flowers.
It can flower once a year with white, paintbrush-like flowers.
The leaves on the bottom die off every so often, so there are never more than 2 or 3 leaves on the plant at a time. The plant sprouts from an underground tuber and produces one set of thick leaves a year. The paintbrush is a special, small plant from the coastal areas of South Africa where it grows in cool, shadow-rich areas in forests.
